Thoughts On Tenacity

We’ve all read it and strive to be tenacious in our efforts to be better runners. But what is it?, how do we develop it? and ultimately use it when needed! Tenacity is that “stick with it” mentality when things get difficult. A patience, steadiness and maturity that you can achieve a pre set goal. Trying over and over regardless of the discomfort until the end point has been reached. It’s not letting our negative thoughts be the higher and overriding process in our actions. We are programmed to move away from pain and towards pleasure. Those with the greatest tenacity tend to mentally or verbally fight against the discomfort or negative thoughts with a positive mental or verbal counter fight.
 Most of us are unable to sustain absolute commitment all of the time. Self doubt can creep in. By being part of a club or group can help build and strengthen your personal resolve resulting in a better state of tenacity in competitive runs. Being in the company of other tenacious people can have the positive effect of generating competitiveness, which in turn will strengthen your personal tenacity. It is having the stubbornness of mind to keep yourself moving to the finish point but with the humility that you may not be the fastest or the winner on the day.
 Develop your own self belief and your goals you set may not be easier but you will achieve them. When i started out and i was running one or two miles i thought 10k was going to take ages to achieve. Then one day i used a positive and tenacious train of thought that whatever happened, however long it took i would complete the distance. It worked, i made that 10k, set a bench mark for myself and set about trying to improve on future attempts. To summarize the following points are worth thinking about with future achievements, tenacity and positivity.

HAVE SELF BELIEF
 
PRACTICE POSITIVE THINKING
 
RUN/JOG/WALK OR CRAWL TO YOUR END GOAL – THEN YOU’LL HAVE SET YOURSELF A BENCH MARK
